Which yarns get in

A yarn enters the catalogue when the maker's own page prints, as text, a yardage per skein and a skein weight. Retailer listings, forum posts, and other databases are not sources. If a maker prints different figures for different lines, each line is its own record.

How figures are copied

Figures are transcribed exactly, including the maker's wording for the weight. A category number is stored only when the maker prints one. Fields the page does not print as text are stored as missing, and the calculator treats them as missing.

What "checked" means

Each record carries the date the page was read. A change on the maker's page makes the record due for a re-check. Records are never silently corrected; the date moves when the figures are re-read.

What the calculator claims

It computes the total length a pattern needs from the pattern yarn's printed yardage, divides by the substitute's printed yardage, and rounds up to whole skeins. It shows the raw quotient. It compares weight categories only when both makers print a number, and when they differ it shows no skein count at all.

What it never claims

That two yarns are interchangeable. That a category match means a gauge match. That a substitution will look, drape, or wear like the original. Those are swatch questions, and the site says so on every result.
