Sometimes solid and print versions match, and sometimes a related line changes the package completely. Berroco Comfort DK and Comfort DK Print both publish 178 yards per 50 g ball. Cascade 220 Superwash Sport publishes 137 yards per 50 g, while 220 Superwash Sport Wave publishes 273 yards per 100 g. Read the exact line before converting a pattern.
| Exact line | Published length | Published mass | Published category or wording |
|---|---|---|---|
| Berroco Comfort DK | 178 yds / 165 m | 50 g | 2 - Sport |
| Berroco Comfort DK Print | 178 yds / 165 m | 50 g | 3 - DK |
| Cascade 220 Superwash Sport | Approx. 137 yds / 125 m | 50 g | Product name; 22 - 24 sts over 4 in |
| Cascade 220 Superwash Sport Wave | Approx. 273 yds / 250 m | 100 g | sport-weight to DK; 22 - 24 sts over 4 in |
The table contains both outcomes. The two Berroco package figures match while their published category numbers differ. The two Cascade lines share a family name and gauge range while using different package sizes and lengths.
A family name is not a data record
Manufacturers use family names to organize related products. Those relationships help a shopper browse, but they do not make one product page evidence for another.
Cascade's 220 Superwash Sport page links to 220 Superwash Sport Wave. The Sport page publishes approximately 137 yards (125 m) in 50 g. The Sport Wave page publishes approximately 273 yards (250 m) in 100 g. Their per-gram ratios happen to be close, but the package identity a buyer selects is different.
The complete name belongs in the record:
maker + family + exact line or variant
Dropping Wave, Print, Sport, Chunky, or another qualifier can attach a valid figure to the wrong product. A correct figure attached to the wrong product is still a wrong figure.
Use the Skeinote calculator only after both selectors match the labels or maker pages in front of you.
Matching yardage does not merge two lines
Berroco Comfort DK and Comfort DK Print each publish 178 yards / 165 m, a 50 g package, and 50% Super Fine Acrylic with 50% Super Fine Nylon. A catalogue could be tempted to create one shared Comfort DK record.
Berroco nevertheless publishes them on separate pages and assigns different category numbers:
Comfort DK: 2 - Sport
Comfort DK Print: 3 - DK
Skeinote therefore keeps two IDs, two source URLs, and two checked records. A calculator selecting one must not silently substitute the other. Read how to use category and gauge fields for the separate job each label field performs.
Package mass cannot fill missing length
A 50 g or 100 g package tells you how much the package weighs. It does not tell you how many yards or metres the yarn contains. Fiber, construction, and line design affect how much length fits into that mass.
The direction of the evidence matters:
- Published length can power a skein, yard, or metre calculation.
- Published mass plus published length from the same exact source can power a grams calculation.
- Published mass without length cannot create a yardage estimate.
- A nearby line's length cannot fill the blank.
Berroco's surveyed Vintage Chunky page publishes 136 yards / 124 m and 5 - Chunky, but no package mass. Skeinote can use its published length while leaving mass empty. If a page printed mass but omitted length, the quantity calculator would have to stop.
Check the record before you calculate
Run this four-part identity check:
- Match the complete maker and line name.
- Match the solid, print, hand-paint, Wave, Sport, Chunky, or other variant.
- Record the package length and mass from that exact source.
- Keep category, gauge, fiber, and care with the same identity.
Then convert the pattern requirement into total length, divide by the target line's published length, and round the final result upward. If the old line is no longer sold, use the recovery process in pattern yarn discontinued? instead of attaching a current relative's figures to it.
This record discipline is what lets a short calculation stay useful. It also means Skeinote's catalogue grows more slowly than a scraped list of names: every added row needs an exact identity and its own evidence.
