What the band is for

A yarn band is a specification sheet folded around a skein. It carries the figures the calculator needs and several it does not.

The four figures that matter

Yardage per skein, skein weight, fiber content, and the weight category. The first is the only one the arithmetic uses; the others tell you what the arithmetic cannot.

When the number is missing

Some makers print "Worsted" and no category number. Some print the category as a symbol only. Skeinote records what is printed and compares categories only when both makers print a number.

Reading a page instead of a band

Maker pages are the source. A retailer listing is not, and neither is a database that does not link to the maker.
